What is circumcision?

Male circumcision removes the foreskin, a layer of skin covering the glans (head) of the penis. It’s an elective procedure (one that’s your choice).

Bellingham Urology Group’s skilled urologists perform newborn circumcisions on infants up to 2 months old in-office. There’s no need to visit the hospital, reducing stress and expense for your family. Circumcisions on older boys and adults take place at the on-site Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Why is circumcision done?

Many parents in the United States choose circumcision for their children, primarily because of their religious or cultural beliefs.

There are also possible future health benefits, such as a reduced risk of infection, and your personal preferences to consider. Before deciding on circumcision, ensure you have an accurate and comprehensive understanding of its potential benefits and risks.

If you have any questions or concerns, Bellingham Urology Group’s providers will be happy to talk with you before the procedure.

What does circumcision involve?

Infant circumcision only takes a few minutes. There are several techniques, but they follow the same general procedure. First, your urologist gives your baby a local anesthetic like lidocaine and oral pain medications that are safe and effective for newborns.

They clean the baby’s penis and foreskin and attach a special clamp to the penis. Next, they cut and remove the foreskin, then apply petroleum jelly over the wound and in the child’s diaper to prevent rubbing. If you choose circumcision for your baby boy, you’ll need to care for his penis as it heals.

Older boys and men undergo the same procedure but might require general anesthesia.

How should I care for the penis after circumcision?

You should clean your baby’s penis with each diaper change and apply fresh petroleum jelly over the wound. You might notice that the penis tip is red, and there may be a small quantity of yellow fluid, but this is typically a sign of healing.

Adults and older boys must also keep their newly circumcised penis clean and protected. Recovery from circumcision can take longer, and the risk of complications could be greater when older boys and men undergo the procedure.
